Nordstrom Rack Haul & Edit
If you have been following along on A Quiet Edit, you may know that at 47 years old, and after gaining and then losing 40 pounds in my 40s, I’ve spent the last few years intentionally rebuilding my style, one piece at a time.
This month, for the first time in years, I completely skipped the Nordstrom Semi-Annual Sale. Nothing looked great so I decided to dive into a massive Nordstrom Rack haul instead. I love using the Rack to hunt down my favorite designers and a fraction the price of retail. I’m always looking to score a great deal on brands like TWP, L’AGENCE, Rag & Bone, Sam Edelman, and PAIGE.
I turned this haul into a two-part YouTube video series! Below is a full breakdown of what worked, what needs alterations, and what is heading straight for the return pile.
Part 1: Shoes, Outerwear & Statement Blazers
In Part 1, I tired on a few loafers and blazers. I don’t know about you, but in my 40’s I’ve learned to embrace subtle animal prints as neutrals in my closet.
Birdies “Heron” Flat in Black: An absolute win. These feel just like slippers while offering an office-ready look that keeps your feet happy all day. KEEP
Sam Edelman Tapestry Loafers: Scored these on a Clear the Rack final sale. This tapestry pattern is giving a “grandma chic” (or maybe Golden Girls) vibe. Not sure which. However, unlike Sam Edelman’s famously soft leather loafers, this fabric is really stiff and I think it will require a real break-in period. Keep that in mind, and maybe consider sizing up half a size. KEEP
Paige Leopard Print Buckle Flats: My first footwear purchase from Paige. These beauties feature a structured toe and bold gold buckle. Honestly I’m in love, except that they run slightly large in my standard size 6.5. KEEP
Blazers (Rag & Bone): I also tried on a beautiful wool blazer from Rag & Bone, but the fit is maybe just a bit too boxy. I may need some help deciding whether she should stay or go! RETURN (MAYBE)
Part 2: Pants, Suits & Moving Beyond the "Capsule Wardrobe"
In Part 2, I tried on a few trousers and complete suit IN SILK! A few years ago, I fell hard for the minimalist capsule wardrobe where everything was beige, tan, gray, and black. While that created a solid baseline library of basics, at 47 I am stepping into an “informed maximalist” era. I’m on the hunt for high-personality hero pieces!
TWP “Didi” Pant in Brown: A long-time obsession picked up on final sale. These fluid, wide-leg trousers have a gorgeous drape and a subtle sheen. As a mid-rise fit, they are a lifesaver for my short torso. Ultra high-rise sometimes leaves me feeling like my pants are one with my bra! Any other short torso girlies that can relate?? At 5’5”, these do require professional hemming. My advice: ask your tailor to leave enough length so they graze the floor when worn with heels. These beauties work best when long and flowy. KEEP
The silk suit in IVORY: Seriously, what was I thinking? But she’s silk and ivory and TWP and…probably more high maintenance than she’s worth. But the sleeve on the jacket!?! This jacket makes a statement with functional arm zippers AND buttons. It gives it an edgy, avant-garde silhouette, but maybe too high fashion for little ole me. RETURN (MAYBE?)
L’AGENCE “Tavia” Wide-Leg Pant: She may be the biggest disappointment of the haul. Advertised online as silk, the tag revealed they’re actually 100% polyester. Priced at over $150, plus the extra tailoring cost required to hem around the bottom border, meh not worth the investment for me. RETURN
The Key to Smart Shopping at Nordstrom Rack
Check Fabric Tags: Online product descriptions aren’t always accurate. Verify material (especially for silk or wool claims) before you remove tags.
Budget for Tailoring: Designer trousers are often long, unless you can pass for a runway model, factor alteration costs into your final budget.
Know Your Final Sale Limits: “Clear the Rack” items cannot be returned. Reserve these purchases for brands you know will fit.
